Help! I Have A Hangover!! – Traditional And Modern Remedies
Who has not had a few too many drinks the night before, gone to bed with a swimmy head, and woken up somewhere strange: in front of a toilet bowl, for example? Even when you have been irresponsible the night before, the rest of the world expects life to go on. Wouldn’t it be nice if there were a cure for the hangover? While people have been partaking of alcohol for centuries, no one has yet to cure the hangover. There are, however, many different philosophies that claim the hangover can be lessened. For those who want the technical details, the body can only process approximately one drink per hour, depending on several factors, such as gender, body size and food consumption. The alcohol content also contributes to this, as well as stress level. So, the best way to get rid of a hangover is to prevent it! But for those instances when we are not prepared before the big night out, some of the most common remedies involve some easy fixes.
The most common fix would be hydrating, as alcohol is thought to dehydrate. I recommend combining this with a couple of Tylenol. Exercise (such as a light jog) is thought to be helpful in getting the blood pumping, thus lessening the effects of a hangover. Jogging with a hangover? Not first on my list.
Some suggest putting a teaspoon of teaspoon of baking soda in some water to fight the nausea. Vitamin B6 is also an option… taken in several hundred of the daily recommended dosage. Other sources say to eat, and that eggs are particularly good for you because of the cysteine they contain (some even say to eat a raw egg in the morning – for me that would ENHANCE the hangover, not help it). There is also the hot shower, or coffee method; however, these theories are frequently debunked by the professional community. Another fix commonly known among bartenders is two drops of bitters and some soda water – but who really keeps those ingredients handy?
One source jokingly recommends kidney dialysis to speed up the process of helping the kidneys filter your blood. Usually reserved for diabetic patients, this route would not be the most attainable. And seeing tubes stuck to your body when waking from the drunk the night before I cannot imagine is such a pleasant way to wake. Personally, I’d take the hangover.

ou drink, you are ingesting poisons into your body. Usually in safe quantities, but with in abundance, the hangover can happen. It is also shown that alcohol is a diuretic, thus the dehydration factor. The liver is not able to process the free radicals in your body when you are drinking too quickly either.
Knowing that you are ingesting toxins into your body and that drinking too heavily can have long-term health effects, researchers are trying to find an answer for this dilemma. While those in official lab coats and the unofficial researchers in the kitchens across the country concoct new remedies, maybe we should all slow down on the drinking just a smidge … or not!
